The Future of Humanity
In this blog post, I am once again asking why. I know I do this pretty much every time, but in chapter three, we are told by O'Brien what the future will look like, and while reading, I could not imagine a reason why. O'Brien describes it as devoid of all emotion except fear, rage, triumph, and self-abasement. He says that they will eliminate everything else: motherhood, marriage, friendship, "sex instinct," the orgasm, love, laughter, art, literature, science, etc. Reading this I thought to myself, what else is there? What else are people living for? What kind of human being would ever think a world without those things would be ideal, what kind of person would rally behind them? The only circumstances I could think of in which someone would think this way is if they were for some reason spiteful of all these things, maybe due to living in unfortunate circumstances for all of their life. Similar to how incels are created I suppose. But even then, for this person's ideas to gain traction they would need other people to resonate with their ideals, and that seems incredibly unrealistic. After the creation of a society like this, there are always going to be people who disagree with or go against the established rules. This can be seen in characters like Julia and Winston, and the fact that the party needed to create an entire ministry to deal with these types of people says more than enough. I just don't understand how anyone living in this society, or working towards the society O'Brien describes could ever find it bearable, let alone actively try to keep it together for the loose idea of "Big Brother," the idea of a person or entity with no proof of existing or explanation of its will. I just can't comprehend a society like this ever coming into being, and I guess complete dictatorships do exist in real life, but there are clear leaders who enforce it, and they do so for, presumably, monetary gain, something that is never demonstrated in 1984. In fact, if anything, as I talked about in my last blog post, the Party allocates their resources in totally unproductive ways.
Anyway, if you can make any sense out of what O'Brien is saying, I invite you to explain it to me in the comments.
